As the world marks International Women’s Day, Hon. Caroline Panglang Dafur, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development in Plateau State, has extended her heartfelt wishes to women across the state and beyond.

Speaking on this year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” Hon. Dafur emphasized the need for intensified efforts to achieve gender equality and protect women’s rights. “Now is the time to act swiftly and decisively. The road ahead remains long, and there is more work to be done,” she stated, calling for increased efforts toward gender equality, economic empowerment, and justice for all women.

Highlighting the progress in Plateau State, Hon. Dafur noted several key achievements, including the successful implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law (VAP) 2015 and the Gender and Equal Opportunity Law, 2022, ensuring legal protection for women.

Additionally, she lauded the establishment of a joint task force to combat child trafficking, sexual and gender-based violence, and the creation of the Sexual Assault Referral Center (SARC), providing critical support to survivors of sexual violence.

Hon. Dafur also acknowledged the ministry’s efforts in repatriating over 200 trafficked victims, offering them psychosocial support, educational scholarships, and vocational training to help rebuild their lives. “We have empowered over 200 women through vocational training and grants, enabling them to launch their own businesses,” she added, highlighting the financial support provided to women cooperatives and agriculture.

Looking ahead, she announced bold plans for 2025, including the approval of 450 million Naira in counterpart funding for the Nigerian for Women project, unlocking access to 4 billion Naira for women’s economic empowerment programs. “We are one of the first six states to establish committees for the domestication of the national women economic policy, creating more opportunities for women’s advancement,” Hon. Dafur revealed.

Furthermore, Hon. Dafur expressed her commitment to building lasting institutions and systems that will sustain the progress made, ensuring that future generations benefit from these reforms. “Together, we will accelerate action and work towards a future where every woman and girl can live free from violence, achieve economic independence, and fully enjoy their rights,” she affirmed.
